The difference in technique and choices in spatial appropriation by a skateboarder is very different than a common patron of a city because skateboarders are artists. There are many different camps in skateboarding and this is hard to explain. In general a skateboarder is a conceptual artist when it chooses or appropriates an object. The object is still a bank or planter but now it has a different history and has become part of the skateboarding language. Making an object a Spot changes the definition of the object and the whole space becomes a factor in movement for the artist. Mark making done by a skateboard is readable to skaters. If a space is interesting for skateboarders they will be there, conceptually they own these spaces. The skateboarder as a contemporary conceptual performance artist takes objects and creates something animated, the appropriated space and objects are part of the materials necessary for such work.
